Why does my power bank turn off after 30 seconds?

Power bank turning off after 30 seconds is a very unusual behaviour. It should only automatically turn off when your smartphone or other gadget you are charging is full.

There are a few reasons for this. But you didn't provide any info about your power bank to go by. So its a bit tricky to answer. However, there are a few pointers/things to check.

1. Quality of the power bank. Fake power banks are dangerous and never give you what's promised on the pack.
2. User manual/product spec. This will give you an indication of what to expect
3. Status and age of the power bank. Batteries degrade over time. Power banks and smartphones give you best battery performance within the usual 500 life cycles, which I estimate to be approx 1.2 - 1.5 years of normal usage. Beyond this point, they die quickly and you’ll need to charge them more frequently. Its like an old laptop that you can only use when plugged into electric power socket. So, if your batteries have no sustainable power left, the power bank will turn off after a few seconds. Or might not even turn on at all if the batteries are totally dead.
4. Power banks have internal control unit/circuit (ICU) that regulates performance. It manages flow of current through the device. It also starts charging when it detects a USB connection to the power bank.
5. If the ICU is faulty or if connection is weak, it won't be able to fully perform any of its pre-programmed functions. The implication is that the power bank may not be able to switch on. And if it does, it might just switch back off again after a few seconds, just like yours.
6. High impact fall can cause other internal damage especially if on a hard surface.
